Worries about "snow mountain" in Gala and fears for more potholes
15 Jan 2010Scottish Borders Council has been piling thousands of tonnes of snow cleared from the region's roads on river banks. One "mountain" is being created on the banks of the River Tweed underneath the Galafoot Bridge in Galashiels.
In the mean time, with the cold weather still not behind us, authorities and residents are beginning to take stock of how we coped with the adverse weather conditions over the past few weeks.
Potholes and damaged roads could be a big problem in the coming months after the recent big freeze blew a big hole in budgets both for emergency winter maintenance and road repairs.
Despite the efforts of gritting and maintenance teams, a report in the Herald revealed this week that councils across Scotland are facing an overspend of nearly double on winter maintenance budgets for gritting and snow clearance, with a national bill over nearly £100 million.
These figures come on top of a previously-reported £1.8 billion backlog for repairs on roads across the country.
