Weather delays opening of new Galashiels sports field
16 NovemberThe official opening of the Netherdale 3G Arena which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, 19 November has been postponed.
Rugby and football legends, Gregor Townsend and John Collins were scheduled to officially open the new facility on Saturday, before a schedule of coaching sessions and games took place on both the full size pitch and smaller five-a-side pitch.
Project Manager Graeme McMurdo explained: "Both the main pitch and five-a-side pitch have been laid, however the weather over the last two weeks has meant that the sand and rubber infill has not been added. For the infill works, the 3G 'grass' must be dry and whilst the recent weather has been mainly mild, there has been little or no wind to keep the pitches dry for the required number of days.
"Everyone involved is hopeful that the weather will change and that the infill work can be completed within the next few weeks. The opening ceremony was intended to showcase the 3G pitches, giving clubs and the local community the opportunity to try them out - unfortunately, this cannot now happen for 19 November but it will happen as soon as practicable."
Details of the rescheduled opening date will be issued in due course.
