Tweedbank Primary School wins Scottish Borders Euroquiz
8 Mar 2010Seven primary schools across the Borders took part in the area's final of the Scotland-wide event, which is organised by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) and sponsored by Standard Life.
As the winning team, Tweedbank will go on to compete against 31 local authority teams for the Standard Life Trophy in the national final on Monday, 10 May in the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament.
Scottish Borders Council's Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Manager Lawrence Alexander added: "We are proud to support Euroquiz. It gives pupils another fun way of learning and is an excellent opportunity to bring children from different areas together to have a fun day which has real educational benefits along the way."
Schools taking part in the Borders final were Heriot, Eyemouth, St Ronans, Knowepark, Tweedbank, St Peters and St Margarets.
Barbara MacLeod from SEET attended the Borders Euroquiz and said: "All seven teams performed remarkably well and congratulations to all the pupils who worked so hard in preparing for the quiz."
Tensions were high as the teams were faced with questions covering history, geography, sport, culture, the European Union and general knowledge.
Executive Member for Education, Councillor Catriona Bhatia, said: "We welcome any type of activity that supports the curriculum and gives children the opportunity to have fun and mix with pupils from other schools. I am sure the team from Tweedbank Primary School will thoroughly enjoy taking part in the final at the Scottish Parliament."
Hanna Aziz from the winning team said: "We worked very hard together as a team for this so we are really happy that we won!"
Hanna's team mate Tara Jefferies added: "It was really good fun even though it was quite difficult."
