Galashiels to benefit after £17m Scottish Borders Council investment plans approved

Scottish Borders Council on Thursday agreed spending plans for projects worth about £17m across the region. A new bus station in Galashiels, roads schemes and increased school capacity are included in the plans, the BBC reports.

The proposals will take place over the next four years, with £6.4m allocated for the current financial year.

Some of the additional investment will be as follows:

  • Development of the Galashiels transport interchange to provide a new bus station linked to the railway - £5.610m.
  • Additional roads projects in 2010/11 - £1.8m.
  • Improving school capacity 2010/11 - £775,000.
  • Catering improvement plan replacing kitchens in primary and secondary schools in 2010/11 - £500,000.
  • Improvements to Eyemouth and Earlston Primary Schools in 2010/11 - £600,000.
  • Strategic business land development to provide serviced industrial land in Hawick, Duns, Lauder, Peebles and Coldstream - £3.635m over the next four years.
  • Netherdale 3G sports pitch development 2010/11 - £750,000.
What do we think of the news?

Joe Scottzep says

Absolute first class, since the erection of that monstrosity which is Tesco the traffic has needed sorting out. I know that it was to be completed in time but it looks as if is getting a boost. Nothing has been mentioned about traffic lights at the bottom of Hall St. Has that been forgotten about? It is also good to hear the pot holes are to be seen to. Since away back in the years of the last Tory government our roads have been in steady decline. If we get saddled with another stint of profiteering pirates again we can probably expect more of the same.
