Festive period delays as Galashiels roadworks extended

There was disappointment this week at the announcement that work on Works on the gas main diversions in the Ladhope Vale area of the town will run on until Friday 16th December.

The work was originally anticipated to be completed week commencing 5 December.

After progress meetings with Scottish Gas Networks (SGN) Borders council said that work that is outstanding is:

  • Completing  a section of new gas main (Ladhope Vale to Bridge Place) and filling trenches, whilst leaving three connection points (High Buckholmside, Bridge Place and Ladhope Vale) open with traffic control in place this week
  • Two way traffic flow will be re-established on High Buckholmside by the 9 December
  • SGN will continue to work on the two remaining connection points on Bridge Place and Ladhope Vale
  • By the 16 December work on the gas network will be suspended for the Christmas break. This will mean the following:
  • The traffic lights at Island Street/High Street/Bridge Place will remain turned off as a trial, but will be monitored prior to the Christmas break
  • The ban on right turns from High Buckholmside to Bridge Place will remain in place
  • Bridge Place will be reduced to one lane from Island Street to the junction with Bridge Street (diversions will remain in place)
  • Ladhope Vale will be reduced to one lane from the junction with Bridge Place to the entrance to the Ladhope Vale car park

Ewan Doyle, Programme Manager at SBC, said: "In agreement with SGN we will be completing this phase of the works by the 16 December to free up traffic movement during the busy Christmas weeks. We regret that there has been a delay and will be working hard towards this reviewed date. We would like to thank local residents and visitors for their continued patience in the run up to this busy time of year.

"There will be minor street lighting and gully replacement works until 23 December, but it is not anticipated that any traffic signal control will be required."
