Damaged weather vane returned to tower home above Galashiels
17 FebruaryA Galashiels landmark has been restored to its rightful place as works nears completion on the town clock and the newly refurbished wind vane takes its place once again at the top of the clock tower.
The wind vane was damaged in the high winds on the evening of 28 December last year, after it fell and became lodged on the clock tower roof.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) co-ordinated the project and contracted BCM Steeplejacks to carry out the required works to fix the damage. The stainless steel shaft was engineered by Anderson and Wilson and leadwork to the roof of the tower was carried out by Finlaysons, both of Galashiels.
As part of the works, a new 3.2 metre stainless-steel shaft has been anchored on top of the clock tower to support the refurbished weather vane.
During the works to repair the damage, SBC is taking the opportunity to clean and re-paint the clock faces.
David Romanis, Property Manager from SBC explained: "This has been a relatively big job and we are very glad that the works are nearing completion.
"Due to the fact we have invested in a stainless steel shaft for the wind vane, this means it is now a more secure and robust anchorage system which is unlikely to ever a present a problem again in the future.
"We would like to thank the residents of Galashiels for their patience during this time and we do apologise for any inconvenience these works may have caused."
All the scaffolding as part of the works will be taken down when the clock faces are refurbished within the next two weeks.
