Council's free cash boost for businesses
19 MayCash injections of up to £4000 are available for projects designed to boost sales and increase profits of existing Borders businesses.
The grant scheme, run by Scottish Borders Council's (SBC) economic development department can fund up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs.
In the first few weeks of operation, more than 200 businesses have already requested more information about the new Scottish Borders Business Fund.
The fund was launched to provide funding support to small businesses, with the aim of providing small amounts of support for projects to help them prosper in the current economic climate.
Despite only running for a few weeks, the panel has already allocated more than 10 per cent of the available funding. Advisers are working with businesses, helping them to develop their ideas before they submit their applications.
Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Economic Development, said: "We have been delighted with the initial surge of interest to the fund and believe this is another indication of how businesses are finding it difficult to access funding to support their business growth activities. This is why it was so vital that the Council responded to the needs of local businesses by introducing this new funding initiative.
"However I know that a lot of businesses are still not aware that this grant fund is there and we'd like to hear more from existing small businesses who are looking for support to expand and develop their operations".
Reacting to the news that funding had been awarded to support their business expansion plans, Tony Stevenson from Avatar Vehicles based in Ettrick Riverside, Selkirk, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded funding for our business expansion plans. We have a long term vision for the business that sees the launch of a unique vehicle buying experience here in the Scottish Borders. Key to this plan is the opening of new premises in Bank Street, Galashiels.
"The award has enabled us to push forward with this and with the opening will come a new and convenient way for Borderers to purchase their vehicles, removing the need to travel to Edinburgh and Carlisle. All round, it's great news for Avatar, the local economy and the people of the region".
