Alex Walker and Liam Kirkwood say: Dear people of Gala, we need your help, please!
26 AprilDear All,
On the 28th June 2010, Alex Walker and Liam Kirkwood are setting off from Lands End, Cornwall, on an 1000 (and a bit) mile walking adventure to John OGroats, Scotland, to raise both money and awareness for the Chernobyl Childrens Project UK (Registration No. 1059832) . Launched in Manchester in 1995, the charitys main goal is to provide humanitarian aid to those children who are still feeling the profound effects of the Chernobyl nuclear power-plant disaster, including thyroid cancer and leukaemia, by providing recuperative holidays in the UK for about 250 Belarusian children each summer, whilst sending medical supplies to Belarus itself.
With the 25th anniversary of the disaster coming up next year, we wanted to do something to remind the UK that the recovery in Belarus is still ongoing. Yet to make this walk a success, we are relying solely on the generosity of the British public. We will be stopping in Galashiels on the night/s of 08-Aug-10 & 09-Aug-10 and were wondering whether you could help in any of the following ways:
1. If you are a Hotel or B&B owner, we know it is a lot to ask for you to donate a room, but could you spare us a sofa, a shower, a meal, a chance to do some laundry, or even a garden to set up our tent?
2. If you are an owner of a campsite/caravan park could you spare us a pitch for the night?
3. Or if you are a member of the tourist board or parish/village/town council if you know anyone who could be able to help us, please would you point us in the right direction?
Since we are doing this all by ourselves we really appreciate all the support we can get and would like to take this opportunity to thank you all in advance for your interest. You can find out more about our walk at www.walk1000.co.uk and I have also attached a screen print of the letter sent to us by Linda Walker confirming our involvement with the charity.
Best Wishes
Alex and Liam
