Unusually among artists, Galashiels painter James Huck (1875-1940) won acclaim within his lifetime.

Painting portraits and landscapes in a number of media, including oil and watercolour, Huck became a prominent member of the Galashiels community.

Educated in Hawick and raised in Galashiels by his father John Huck (1837-1918), a local trapper, fisherman, dairyman and mole catcher, James Huck moved to Glasgow to attend the city's School of Art in 1900, where he won a travel scholarship and set out to France and Italy.

Upon his return to Scotland, Huck joined Glasgow Art School's faculty, teaching from May 1902 through to 1937/8. During this period he ascended to Assistant Professor in preparatory life, antique, ornament and preparatory painting in 1908/9, and to Assistant Director in 1926, before retirement in 1938.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
