Well folks I would just like to say on behalf of Marian and the rest of the band how disappointed we were not to be able to do the guest artist spot on Thurs 3rd Nov. Unfortunately Marian took ill and we did not feel it was advisable for her to play. Everyone will be pleased to know that Marian has been given the "all clear" and after a good sleep I'm sure she'll be fighting fit again. Hopefully we will be able to appear as guest artists in the future.

Regards Max Ketchin

Hello everyone,

I would like to come and see you guys perform. When and where is the next performance ?

Brian Forrest says

Hi Saurabh...welcome to Gala...we'd be delighted to see you at our meetings, but unfortunately, as it says on our webpage, we meet in October, November, December, February,March and April, and we have closed for the summer...there are other Accordion & Fiddle clubs in the area, including the Kelso Club, which meets tomorrow night at 7.00pm in the Cross Keys Hotel, Kelso; why not pop along and enjoy the evening, you can also get details of other meetings/dates/venues at that time...cheers, Brian.

Hello Brian

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately I was not able to make last week to see Kelso Club. I will try to go for their next performance. I dont have a car yet so its quiet difficult to travel to Kelso.

We are delighted that our guest for the meeting on Thursday,2nd December, will be the ever-popular Marian Anderson Trio. A great night's music commences at the usual time of 7.30, with contributions from players of all standards. Admission for non-players is still only £3.50, concessions £3.00, with optional supper £1.50. Why not come along and enjoy...?!

Brian Forrest says

Having been forced to cancel our December meeting due to the heavy snow, and since we don't have a January meeting, we are really looking forward to a great night of music this Thursday, 3rd February, when our Guest Artiste will be Jimmy Cassidy. Three times Scottish Junior Accordion Champion between the ages of 12 and 14...Senior Classical Champion at 15...All Scotland Champion at 16...Jimmy would be the first to concede that several million gallons of water have passed under a lot of bridges since then, but he has certainly not wasted the years, touring extensively all over the world, serving as Musical Director in prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera House, and working alongside many of the greats in Scottish entertainment, including Lex MacLean, Andy Stewart and Jimmy Blue, to name but a few.

A s always, we will be entertained also by  a variety of local musicians, and the evening will kick off at 7.30 p.m. in the Clovenfords Country Hotel, with admission charges for non-musicians still a very reasonable £3.50 (£3.00 concessions), and an optional supper available.

The March meeting, on Thursday, 3rd March, takes the form of a club night, with no special guest artiste, just lots of great music from regular local and not-so-local players....anyone with an interest in our kind of music is more than welcome to come and enjoy a night of "anything goes"! Whether you can play an instrument or just want to listen, why not pop in to the Clovenfords Hotel, starting at 7.30 p.m. Entry free for players, otherwise £3.50 (£3.00 concessions) with optional supper...look forward to seeing you!

Representatives from several of the local Borders Accordion & Fiddle Clubs took over the foyer of Tesco in Galashiels on Sunday, October 23rd, at the suggestion of Paul Capaldi, a Galashiels music teacher, who also runs the Lauder and Selkirk clubs. A number of players, including a few of Paul's pupils, entertained shoppers for over three hours, and were very well received.

Clubs on in the next week or so include Galashiels, in the Clovenfords Hotel on Thursday evening, 3rd November from 7.30 to 11.00, where the guests will be The Judith Linton Trio; Lauder, in the Public Hall on Sunday, 6th November, from 2pm to 5.30pm, with the Steven Todd Scottish Band; and Selkirk, on Thursday 10th November in the Cricket Club from 7.30 to 11.00, with Riddle Fiddles. There are several other clubs throughout the Borders, details available on request from Paul Capaldi on 0774 066 3472, or Brian Forrest on 0750 111 4825.

All welcome, whether or not you play an instrument...great entertainment for less than a fiver...why not come along and enjoy!

The December meeting (Thursday, 1st), will take the form of the biannual John Fairbairn Memorial Club Night, where we have no special guest, but simply a night full of great music supplied by local musicians and other regular attenders from further afield. This always proves to be a very popular evening, and a share of the proceeds are donated to charity in the name of John, who was our Chairman, and a driving force of the club, until his untimely death in 2003 at the age of 40. All welcome, a guid night guaranteed!

Our first meeting of the New Year features the Jim Cleland Quartet, and promises to be a wee bit different...although Scottish music will no doubt be well represented, the guys like to mix in a fair amount of other styles as well. Leader Jim Cleland started playing at 8 years old and took all the exams with the British Association of Accordionists where he achieved honours in all including the diploma. That was all classical training and he was the under 16 British champion many years ago. He won a talent contest at Dunblane Hydro, where he was spotted by the late Jim MacLeod and the rest is history. He played with the Jim MacLeod band for over 30 years, travelling the world as well as filling the resident spot in the Hydro.

A glance at the rest of the line-up is evidence of the quality on show, with Donald Christie on piano, John Sinton on bass and Max Ketchin on drums.

Add in the usual high standard from our local and visiting musicians and a great night's music is in prospect. Come early...Clovenfords Country Hotel, Thursday, February 2nd, 7.30pm, entry £3.50 (£3.00), optional supper £1.50. Look forward to seeing you !
